Professional dressforms can cost hundreds of dollars and don’t always fit your actual measurements and body shape. In this workshop, you will make a duct-tape dressform that replicates your body, similar to the process described in this article. The finished dressform will have black metal stand that enables it to be at your height and rotate freely, a white jersey fabric covering, and key measurement lines and points so that you can use it for fitting patters and draping your own design ideas. The class will involve being wrapped in tape and then wrapping a partner, with guidance from the instructor so that the finished product is well-made and uniform. Please keep in mind that this is an intense workshop — you will be standing still for about 1-1.5 hours while you are being wrapped, and then will be wrapping another person before stuffing and completing your form.
Class time: 1 session 6-7 hours (with a lunch break around noon — you can bring your lunch or go out to several restaurants in the area)
Maximum class size: 8 people
Supplies required: All materials are included in the class fee. You will need to come dressed in a way that will enable you to get the most accurate form possible. We recommend wearing leggings and a bra similar to what you wear most often. Please also bring one long t-shirt that can be destroyed in the process (this will become part of the dressform). It does not need to be a close fitting shirt, just ideally long enough to cover your hips.
Class fee includes a non-refundable materials cost of $60, which includes the duct tape tape, polyfill (for stuffing), black line marking tape, white jersey fabric (for covering), PVC pipes and extensions, and the stand. If you must cancel or reschedule your participation in the class, you can opt to be provided with materials purchased for your form and stand.
Prerequisites: none
Fee: $125
Schedule:
Prefer a private wrapping? You can also schedule an individual or two-person session for the materials cost plus the private lesson time. One person takes about 4 hours ($180 total cost), two people typically requires 5 hours ($150 each, total cost). Please see the private lesson page for information on scheduling.
