Group Class: Working with Patterns

Stack of patterns, courtesy velvetstrawberries.typepad.com.

Patterns can be confusing even to an experienced sewer. In this four-class series, you will learn how to choose your correct pattern size, select appropriate fabric, adjust the pattern to fit your body type, understand what all the lines and symbols mean, use the correct layout to cut your pattern pieces, and work step-by-step through your pattern instructions to construct your first garment. This class is ideal for someone who has never sewed a garment using a pattern before, or someone who would like to review and reinforce your understanding of how to use patterns accurately to make your own clothes.

Class time: 4 sessions, 2 hours each

Maximum class size: 4-6 people

Supplies required: Pattern, fabric, and notions for one garment. Once you register for the class, I will contact you within a day or two with advice on choosing your pattern type, size, and suitable fabrics. For beginners, I recommend choosing a skirt or pair of pajama pants, and also looking for one of the “easy” lines offered by major pattern companies, such as the following:

Prerequisites: Intro to sewing or knowledge of basic sewing machine operation

Please note that this class operates in a series, so it is important that you will be able to attend all classes to gain the most from your lessons.  Make-ups cannot be guaranteed for missed classes, however, you may be able to select specific dates among the various series offered below if you contact me in advance to verify availability. Also note that the first class of every series  is essential to attend because it will include a thorough tutorial on how to read a pattern, lay out your fabric, and cut accurately.
