Working with Patterns

Stack of patterns, courtesy velvetstrawberries.typepad.com.

Patterns can be confusing even to an experienced sewer, but with a little practice and some help learning the symbols and lingo you’ll be on your way to making all kinds of clothes and accessories. We now offer two ways to get started: a one-class tutorial on reading a pattern, or a six part series (which includes the tutorial) so that you can actually work your way through the process of constructing a garment of your choice. See below for more details on the two options:

TUTORIAL – One Class

In this two-hour tutorial, you will learn how to read a pattern cover-to-cover, from the outside of the envelope to the tissue paper inside. We’ll discuss how to choose your correct pattern size and ways patterns can be adjusted to fit different bodies, what factors to take into consideration when selecting fabric, understanding what the lines and symbols mean, and using the correct layout to cut your pattern pieces. We’ll also discuss some of the differences between vintage patterns and modern patterns, and information on various pattern companies to explore. The class will be a demonstration and questions and answer format, so that you can build a better knowledge base before you start a project. You are welcome to bring patterns or fabrics with you that you have questions about, but will not be doing any cutting or work on a project in this class.

Class time: 1 session, 2 hours

Maximum class size: 15 people

Supplies required: none

Prerequisites: Intro to sewing or knowledge of basic sewing machine operation

Fee: $30

THE FULL SERIES – Six Classes

For those who would like the full introduction to garment construction, this six-part series (which includes the tutorial above) gives you an opportunity to work step-by-step through a pattern of your choice to create a garment. The first class will be the pattern tutorial, the second class will be laying out, cutting and marking your clothing pieces, and the remaining four classes will be dedicated to sewing and fitting the piece. This class is ideal for someone who has never sewed a garment using a pattern before, or someone who would like to review and reinforce your understanding of how to use patterns accurately to make your own clothes. You can also take this class more than once if you would like to try a more challenging pattern, and can skip the tutorial and receive a credit for one Open Studio class in exchange. You will need to purchase your own fabric, pattern, and notions in time for the second class.

Class time: 6 sessions, 2 hours each (the first session is the pattern tutorial)

Maximum class size: 6 people

Supplies required: Pattern, fabric, and notions for one garment. These should be purchased after the first class but before the second class.

Prerequisites: Intro to sewing or knowledge of basic sewing machine operation

Fee: $180

ADVICE ON CHOOSING A PATTERN

Schedule:

Please note that this class operates in a series, so it is important that you will be able to attend all classes to gain the most from your lessons.  However,  if you know in advance that you will be missing one of the listed dates, you can take a make-up either at one Monday night Open Studio or at a future Thursday class in another series. Please contact me in advance to verify availability. Also note that the first class of every series  is essential to attend because it will include a thorough tutorial on how to read a pattern, get the right size for you, and choose appropriate fabric.
