Stack of patterns, courtesy velvetstrawberries.typepad.com. Working with Patterns

Patterns can be confusing even to an experienced sewer. In this four-class series, you will learn how to choose your correct pattern size, select appropriate fabric, adjust the pattern to fit your body type, understand what all the lines and symbols mean, use the correct layout to cut your pattern pieces, and work step-by-step through your pattern instructions to construct your first garment. This class is ideal for someone who has never sewed a garment using a pattern before, or someone who would like to review and reinforce your understanding of how to use patterns accurately to make your own clothes.

Class time: 4 sessions, 2 hours each

Maximum class size: 4-6 people

Supplies required: Pattern and fabric for one garment. You can contact me before your first class if you want advice on pattern type, size, or suitable fabrics. For beginners, I recommend choosing one of the “easy” lines offered by major pattern companies, such as the following:

  • Simplicity It’s So Easy
  • Butterick Easy See and Sew
  • McCalls Easy Stitch n’ Save
  • Very Easy Vogue Dresses, Sportswear, or Custom Fit (*Keep in mind that Vogue’s easy patterns are a little more stylish, but also a little more challenging than some other companies)
  • Burda Easy (*Burda is a European company, so many of the pattern markings are a little different from the American ones. If you choose to do a Burda pattern, I’ll also provide an American one at the lesson so you can see the difference)

Prerequisites: Intro to sewing or knowledge of basic sewing machine operation
