The Story

A few years ago, I started teaching sewing classes for kids as a hobby on the side. not knowing where it would lead. Around the same time, my friendĀ  Laura Lee and I launched the DC Threads Sewing Lounge, a monthly community service program to help keep the craft of sewing alive in D.C. The response to DC Threads was overwhelming, and it was clear that our city needed more outlets for both children and adultsĀ  to explore this wonderful craft. In 2009, I opened a small office in Dupont Circle to teach private lessons, and the client base grew so quickly I needed a bigger space (and more teachers!). The studio moved to its current location in Adams Morgan in November 2010, and we’ve been steadily expanding to offer more classes and programs to the Greater Washington community.

Sewing is a skill that not only lets you explore your innate creativity, but is also practical and useful, a combination that makes it a very rewarding hobby and art form.

The name “Bits of Thread” comes from one of the side-effects of sewing that I have come to love. After a long day of making a new summer dress or teaching a group of teenagers how to use a sewing machine for the first time, I’d come home with little bits of thread still stuck to my shoes, clothes, and even in my hair– little reminders that I was doing something I loved. Whether you come for one class or for many, I hope to share some of my joy for this art form, and maybe get a few bits of thread stuck to you too.

Thanks and happy sewing,

Allison Lince-Bentley
