I have been sewing since I was seven years old, but my life as a sewing instructor began just a couple of years ago when I started teaching sewing and fashion design programs for youth in community centers around DC. What got me hooked was the sense of delight and empowerment my students felt once they saw what they could do with a sewing machine and some patience.
Sewing is a skill that not only lets you explore your innate creativity, but is also practical and useful, a combination that makes it a very rewarding hobby and art form. Here are some of the ways and places I have worked in the sewing world:
- Co-founder of the DC Threads Sewing Lounge, a group dedicated to keeping sewing and stitch crafts alive in the District of Columbia
- Active member of the American Sewing Guild (ASG) and grand prize winner in the ASG’s 2009 Creativity Contest.
- Sewing/Fashion Instructor for youth ages 8-17 at the Sitar Center for the Arts
- Sewing/Fashion Instructor for youth ages 8-12 at the Sew-n-Know program at Turkey Thicket Recreation Center
- Sewing/Fashion Instructor for 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students with the DC Children Youth Investment Trusts’ Project My Time at Sousa Middle School
- Sewing/Fashion Instructor for teens age 14-21 at DC Camp Runway
- Member of the Greater Washington Fashion Chamber of Commerce (GWFCC)
- Author of the Sew it Works! Essential Guide to Sewing Machine Repair
If you’d like to get to know me a little before signing up for lessons, feel free to send me an email and we can schedule a call so you can ask any questions you have and be sure that I’m the right teacher for you.
